Skandia Gateway
The Port of Gothenburg is the only port in Scandinavia that can receive the world’s largest vessels, but at present they are unable to do so fully loaded. The Skandia Gateway project involves an extensive deepening of the fairway with the purpose of ensuring direct shipping to Sweden and securing the business sector's access to the entire world.

Skandia Gateway
Shipping is crucial for Swedish exports, and the Port of Gothenburg is the only port in Scandinavia that can offer direct shipping to other continents for the largest ocean-going cargo vessels. However, due to insufficient depth in the fairway and harbor basin, the largest ships cannot call fully loaded. To secure Swedish industry’s access to global markets, the fairway leading to the port needs to be deepened by approximately four meters. Additionally, the quays in Skandiahamnen, the container terminal in Gothenburg, need to be deepened and reinforced.
The project is planned and carried out in collaboration between the Swedish Maritime Administration, the Swedish Transport Administration, and the Port of Gothenburg. The Swedish Maritime Administration is responsible for deepening and widening the fairway as well as adjusting the navigational markings, while the Port of Gothenburg is responsible for quay modifications.
The area that needs to be deepened is nearly five kilometers long, and the maximum draft must be increased from the current 13.5 meters to approximately 17.5 meters. This entails a dredging requirement of up to approximately 11 million cubic meters. Additionally, the navigational markings along the fairway will be adjusted.
Preparations began in 2019 and the Port of Gothenburg began quay reinforcement work in February 2024. The Swedish Maritime Administration plans to start dredging work in the fairway after the summer of 2026, and the project is expected to be fully completed by the turn of the year 2027/2028.
