MaDaMe (Maritime Data Methods for Safe Shipping)
Digitization has inevitably begun its journey to the heart of maritime operations. The benefits of digitization extend beyond just economic and operational advantages. In the areas of safety and environmental protection, digital tools offer new opportunities for risk management and minimizing environmental impact.
Development of Digital Maritime Services
In the MaDaMe project, funded by the EU and the Interreg Baltic Sea Programme, countries in the Baltic Sea region are collaborating to jointly (further) develop and test digital services in maritime waters and cyber-secure communications between maritime authorities and vessels.
The MaDaMe project is supported by the ongoing development of S-100 standards within international maritime organizations. The standardization work aims to provide a universal model for representing and sharing hydrographic and other maritime-related information. ECDIS units compliant with these new standards will be available for navigation from 2026 and will become mandatory for new ships by early 2029.
The new maritime services enable the reception of information in digital form directly to the vessels' ECDIS systems in real-time. These digital services will be offered alongside existing services provided by current systems or via voice communication.
What is being done in the MaDaMe project?
The project focuses on designing and testing three digital services:
- Digital navigation warning service
- Digital service for communication with aids to navigation (AtoN)
- Digital VTS traffic management service
These services are being tested on vessels operating in the Baltic Sea region, and the experiences will be shared with maritime authorities and international organizations such as IALA, IMO, and IHO.
Another development focus, besides the services, is the Maritime Connectivity Platform (MCP), which can be used to offer digital services securely to vessels.
In addition to the platform and services, the project is also developing and testing new communication methods required for digital data transfer services between shore stations and vessels, such as VDES (VHF Data Exchange System).
The MaDaMe project is promoting the concrete implementation of digital services in the maritime waters of the Baltic Sea region and providing valuable input to the ongoing international standardization efforts.
