Landsort Fairway

With increasing cargo handling in Södertälje and Mälarhamnarna, there is a growing need for a fairway with greater capacity, adapted for larger and deeper-draft vessels. The current fairway, which has been accident-prone in certain sections over the years, is narrow and winding, with accessibility and capacity limitations due to wind and darkness restrictions.

In 2014, Södertälje Port, Södertälje Municipality, the Swedish Transport Administration, and the Swedish Maritime Administration conducted a study identifying the need for safety improvements in the fairway, as well as a demand for accommodating larger and deeper-draft vessels than today.

Since then, the Swedish Transport Administration has commissioned the Swedish Maritime Administration to conduct a fairway investigation aimed at improving safety, capacity, and accessibility in the fairway between Södertälje and Landsort.

In the planning of the new fairway, future vessels will be designed for a maximum draft of 10.5 meters instead of the current 9 meters. The width will remain approximately 32 meters, and the maximum vessel length will be around 220 meters without nighttime restrictions. Currently, traffic is limited to 160 meters without restrictions and 200 meters with certain restrictions.

The animation shows a to-scale representation of a ship (approximately 220 x 32 meters) traveling along the proposed new route between Landsort and Södertälje. Note! In reality, the journey takes approximately two to three hours.
